Although Erwin Michalec was born in North Poland, the real place of his childhood was Kurpie in Central Poland, known for its  Wycinanki" (pronounced Vee-chee-non-kee is the Polish word for 'paper-cut design.  This is usually a symmetrical design, cut from a single piece of coloured paper, and folded a single time, with spruce trees and birds as the most popular motifs.

In the Afro-Kurpie Collection, Erwin Michalec plays with the idea of what would happen if Kurpie were located somewhere in Africa. The popular motifs ( trees and birds) He changes for African trees and animals.
